Friction IndexWhy Smart Ring Thickness Matters
Standard metal jewelry rings typically measure 1.2mm to 1.6mm in thickness. Due to custom internal biometric sensors (PPG photodetectors, accelerometers, temperature sensors) and rechargeable lithium-ion polymer batteries, smart rings are substantially bulkier, measuring between 2.5mm and 3.0mm.
1. Knuckle clearance
Fingers expand and swell throughout the day based on temperature, sleep cycles, and physical workouts. Make sure to size your ring based on knuckle clearance first.
2. Adjacent friction
Wearing a smart ring on your middle or ring finger can cause friction on the adjacent fingers. Index finger placement remains the industry recommendation.
3. Sizing Kits
Each manufacturer (Oura, Samsung, Ultrahuman) uses a proprietary sizing scale. A size 9 in Oura is not equivalent to a size 9 in Samsung. Sizing kits are essential.
